Focus: The Titles Of Jesus (Pt.3)
Text: Lk.2:11
"For unto you is born this day in the city of David a SAVIOUR, which is CHRIST the LORD."
Jesus is the SAVIOR, the CHRIST, and the LORD. We have considered the first two. Now we concentrate on the last title - the Lord. In his first Pentecostal message, Peter says, "God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both LORD and CHRIST" (Act.2:36). The name, Jesus, means 'the Savior, or YHVH is our salvation' - Yeshua. Jesus is the Lord God Himself, bringing salvation to us. He is the Christ - the anointed one and His anointing, the Lord.
The word 'Lord' is 'kurios' in the Greek. It is derived from the word 'kuros,' which is related to or stems from 'kueoo.' It means 'to swell.' Is it not interesting to know that our Lord swells, and when He does, the enemy is in trouble? He swells to conquer. He swells and enlarges. He swells to swallow up every foe. The word speaks of one has or possesses power. He is the Strong One. He has ruling power. He is the Sovereign One.
Jesus Christ possesses supreme power. He exercises control over all and has infinite edge over all.
Jesus Christ rules over all, rules in us, rules through us, and will rule with us when He returns to the earth. His influence is infinite and universal.
His word is law. His decree is final. Whatever He says, stands. He is owner and ruler. He stands taller than all of us. He is the Most High. In the words of Scripture, we pray, "Hosanna in the highest." Every force in the universe is at His beck and call. He is the Master, and we are His subjects. He governs the elements and decides the destinies of all men. He is the Lord of space and time. His Lordship is eternal.
On a personal note, Jesus Christ is my Lord. He rules over me, rules in me, and rules through me. I am at His service - always at His beck and call. I am loyal and obedient to Him.
As the Savior, He saves me from my sin and from myself. He saves me from shame, danger and trouble. He chooses how to save me - THROUGH difficulties and challenges or OUT of them. He saves me from the enemy. He keeps me from all evil and the evil one. He shields me from calamities and all kinds of attacks. He watches over me. He prevails over my enemies and keeps my feet from slipping off or falling.
Moses exclaims, "O MY Lord" (Ex.4:10). David exclaims, "O LORD our Lord…" The second word 'Lord' is 'âdôn in Hebrew, and it means, 'to rule,' or 'owner, sovereign, master, lord, controller.' Jesus Christ is our Adonai - the Sovereign Lord. The psalmist declares, "Thou art MY Lord" (Ps.16:2). The word for 'Lord' here is 'ădônây. It is 'âdôn emphasized. It is the Hebrew counterpart of the Greek word 'kurios.'
Paul says, "And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ IS Lord, to the glory of God the Father" (Phil.2:11). Jesus Christ is Lord. In verse 19, he says, "I trust in the Lord…" In chapter 3:1, he says, "Rejoice in the Lord." In 4:1, he says, "Stand fast in the Lord." Verse 2 says, "Be of the same mind in the Lord." Verse 10 says, "I rejoiced in the Lord greatly…" In verse 23, Paul says, "The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all…" Finally, in 4:5, he says, "The Lord is at hand."
Jesus Christ is Lord everywhere. He is Lord over us. He is absolutely in control in all spheres of our lives. Make Jesus Christ your own Lord. Acknowledge His Lordship in your life. He is our Savior, our Christ, and our Lord, now and forever.
