Focus: The Good Spirit
Text: Neh.9:20
"Thy good Spirit."
As Israel traveled from Egypt to Canaan God gave them His good Spirit to instruct them. God has a good Spirit. His Spirit is not evil, but good. God is a Spirit, and He is good, in and out.
As God's children traveling through this world, God has given us His good Spirit to guide and guard us. The Spirit of God is not only good; He is also wise, and by His wisdom He teaches and shows us the way to go. The word 'instruct' is ώâkal in Hebrew, and it is variously translated in the King James Version of the Bible as wise, wittingly, guiding, prosper, understand, prudent, taught, consider, wisdom, expert, skillful. It is also the word used in describing David as one who "behaved himself wisely."
The good Spirit of God properly and successfully conducts us in our spiritual journey here on earth. He is ensuring that we get to our intended destination safely and successfully.
He is our Tour Guide - the only expert in the business, escorting us to our promise land - our eternal home in a new heaven and a new earth.
In the Scripture we are given different descriptions of the Spirit. He is described as:
*The Spirit of GOD
*The Spirit of the LIVING God
*The Spirit of LIFE
*The Spirit of the Lord - ADONAI
*The Spirit of the LORD - YHVH
*The Spirit of CHRIST
*The HOLY Spirit
*The Spirit of HOLINESS
*The Spirit of GLORY
*The Spirit of GRACE
*The Spirit of Christ
*The Spirit of His Son
*The ETERNAL Spirit
*The Holy Spirit of PROMISE
*The Spirit of TRUTH
Awesome descriptions of the Holy Spirit! Aren't they? Go through them one by one, and let the light and force of each description dawn on your inner being. Concerning Christ, Isaiah says, "And the SPIRIT of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of WISDOM and UNDERSTANDING, the spirit of COUNSEL and MIGHT, the spirit of KNOWLEDGE and of the FEAR of the LORD" (Isa.11:2). Our guiding Spirit has it all. The Spirit possesses in Himself everything that the believer in Christ needs for his spiritual journey in this world.
With the Holy Spirit in our lives, we will never miss our way. We cannot be directionless, helpless, powerless or hopeless. We cannot get trapped in this world or get stranded in the way. The Spirit has all the intelligence, brilliance and strength. He illuminates our paths, guiding our every step and our every stop. The Spirit is not only with us; He also lives in us. He is totally good - no imperfections of any sort whatsoever, no slightest ugliness, no badness at all, no iota of evil in Him. He is our superintendent, sustainer, supplier, supporter and strengthener.
He is truly and thoroughly good. Follow His lead! Hear His words and heed His voice! David says, "The Spirit of the LORD spake by me, and his word was in my tongue" (2Sam.23:2). Enjoy the guidance of God's good Spirit!
