Focus: Songs at Night
Text:35:10
"But none saith, Where is God my maker, who giveth songs in the night."
The night time signifies the season of darkness, of old age, of trouble, of grief, pain and despair, and of suffering and affliction. It speaks of the season when your back is against the wall, when your foundation is shifting, and when you find yourself in the middle of nowhere.
The psalmist says, "I am weary with my groaning; all the night make I my bed to swim; I water my couch with my tears" (Ps.6:6). In the book of Proverbs, we read, "In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night" (Prov.7:9).
It's in this sort of season that God steps into your life and puts a song of hope in your heart. He lightens up your heart with a song.
Out of the night of your life your God produces a song in your soul. He wires your soul to sing at night. Song after song flows from heaven into your spirit.
Your God is the producer of songs in your night season. The psalmist confidently declares, "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me" (Ps.23:4). He says again, "I will bless the LORD, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons" (Ps.16:7). He says that "weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning" (Ps.30:5). God gives songs in the night season of life and causes joy to spring up in the morning. Job talks about "the visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men" (Jb.4:13). God gives visions and songs in the night, and joy in the morning.
God never abandons His own at any time. The psalmist testifies, "Thou hast visited me in the night" (Ps.17:3). He says, "In the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life" (Ps.42:8). God makes you "call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune with mine own heart: and my spirit made diligent search" (Ps.77:6).
Child of God, let it be known to you that your God gives songs in the night season of life. Even now, He says to you, "Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day" (Ps.91:5). God is bringing you to the place where you can boldly say, "I have remembered thy name, O LORD, in the night" (Ps.119:55). The name of the Lord will raise songs in your heart. Your faith in Christ will be enlivened and rekindled with spiritual songs. Like the psalmist, you will say, "I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches" (Ps.63:6).
Paul and Silas are good examples of how God can give songs in the night. Luke reports that "at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them" (Act.16:25). They were in jail and in chains, but God was there with them, putting songs of praise on their lips. They sang until the foundations of the jailhouse were shaken, and the chains on the hands and feet of the prisoners were broken.
God has put a song in your heart; just sing it. Don't let your pain steal your song. Don't let your sadness swallow your song. Don't let your grief drown your song of joy. There's hope for you. Just let the songs flow. God will use your songs to change your circumstance and your life. Your God gives SONGS in the night.
