Text: Lam.3:24

"The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him."

The psalmist acknowledges the Lord as his portion in this world, and the psalmist is not alone in his acknowledgement. The Lord is the portion of every believer in Christ. I boldly say to you that the Lord is your portion in this life. It is in Him that you live, move, and have your whole being. God is your Everything. There is nothing you can be or do without Him. He is your Maker and Master, your Creator and Redeemer. He is your Supplier and Sustainer, your Guide and Guard. He is your Friend and Physician.

The psalmist says, "Therefore will I hope in him." The Lord, who is your portion, deserves and demands your total trust. He is capable and reliable.

Our text says, "The LORD is my portion." In another place, the psalmist declares, "I cried unto thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my refuge and my portion in the LAND OF THE LIVING" (Ps.142:5). Not only is the Lord your portion, but He is also your portion right here in this world and right now in the present state of things. The psalmist also says, "God is the strength of my heart, and my portion FOR EVER" (Ps.73:26).

God is not your portion for a while or your portion in the land of the living; but He is also your portion forever. From time to eternity God is your portion and the lot of your inheritance.

He says again, "Thou art my portion, O LORD: I have said that I would keep thy words" (Ps.119:57). This is now a declaration with a commitment to keep the words of God. You will not only cherish or treasure God's words, but also, you will obey them. As your eternal portion, you are committed to doing whatever He says. You do His bidding.

As the Lord is your portion, so are you His portion. Moses says, "For the LORD'S portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance" (Dt.32:9). The psalmist says, "The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot" (Ps.16:5). The Lord maintains, secures and sustains your lot in life. In the Song of Solomon, we read, "My beloved is mine, and I am his."

God is your portion and you are His. You belong to each other. You are in kinship with the Lord.

Zechariah declares, "And the LORD shall inherit Judah his portion in the holy land, and shall choose Jerusalem again" (Zech.2:12).

You are God's inheritance; you are His choicest treasure in the universe. The Lord is your portion and you are His - forever.
