Focus: Five Stones of Scripture (Pt.2)
Text: 1Sam.17:40
"And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine."
We have looked at one smooth stone, that of the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and we can see that the name of God is loaded with power, and it works for those who are initiated into and are connected to the name in spirit and in truth.
Next smooth stone to consider is the infallible and authoritative word of God. Interestingly, the word has been at the beginning and even before the beginning of time. You can call it, The Living and Eternal Word.
Concerning Christ, John wrote, "And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God" (Rev.19:13). The Word of God is the name of Jesus Christ. The Word of God is a person - the person of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Word is both written and spoken. John goes on to say "he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword…" (Rev.1:16). The word in the mouth of Christ is a two-edged sword. No force or an army in all the universe can withstand the cutting edge of this two-edged sword. Sharp stones work like swords; they are dangerous. Again John writes, "These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges…" (Rev.2:12). Jesus Christ says to the church, "Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth" (Rev.2:16). We read also in Rev.19:15 that "out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron…"(Rev.19:15).
The word is a powerful weapon against the enemy any time, any day. God says through Jeremiah, "Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?" (Jer.23:29). Even huge rocks cannot withstand the force of the word of God. The word of God is a winning weapon. It never fails to deliver victory to those who believe in it and use it rightly. The word of God is the smooth stone that plunders hell and devastates Satan's kingdom. The word of God is our offensive armor and weapon of attack. Paul tells us, "And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God" (Eph.6:17).
The word of God is the sword that the Spirit uses to advance God's purpose. It is a sword of victory in the mouth of believers in Christ.
The writer of the Hebrews declares, "For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow…" (Heb.4:12). The word of God pierces through the surface and separates things that are divinely designed to stay separate. The word of God always avails, prevails and succeeds. It is infallible and invincible.
Isaiah tells us how the rain falls upon the earth and waters the earth, making it possible for the fields to yield their crops, and then he says, "So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it" (Isa.55:11).
Nothing can stop the word from hitting its targets or hinder it from achieving its set purpose.
Use the smooth stone of the word of God; your Goliath must fall by it! Read it well! Store it in your heart! Believe and do the word! Satan knows how powerful and dangerous the Word is, and that is why he does everything in his power to steal it from us. Take the word seriously! Live by it and speak it! Let your whole life be governed by it!
